WHAT IS A STRUCTURAL ENGINEER?
Structural Engineers are licensed professionals who use their skills and training in the sciences
and mathematics to improve the quality of life of our clients. Structural Engineers are specifically trained in those areas
involving buildings or structures. As Structural Engineers, we are involved in the design of new buildings and the evaluation
of existing structures.
What are the requirements to be a licensed professional structural engineer?
The requirements can
vary by state. In the states where we are licensed, a licensed, professional, structural engineer must complete a four year,
Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited university. During the senior year, an eight hour, Fundamentals
of Engineering, exam is taken, testing the basics of engineering knowledge. Upon passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam
and graduating, the candidate begins a four year intern training program in a particular division of Civil Engineering - in our case,
Structural Engineering. Following the successful development of the candidate through the intern program, a second eight hour
exam is taken, testing design skills and ethics. With a passing grade, a trainee is granted a license in the state of residence
and allowed to add “PE” to the end of their name, indicating that their are licensed professional engineers. With the license from
the State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors, the Professional Engineer is allowed to practice engineering
in the state, providing design and consultation services for the public.
AS STRUCTURAL ENGINEERS, WHAT CAN WE DO FOR YOU?
"Structural
engineering is the science and art of designing and making, with economy and elegance, buildings, bridges, frameworks and other similar
structures so that they can safely resist the forces to which they may be subjected."
